Christopher Columbus: 3 things you think he did that he didn’t

So you think that Christopher Columbus discovered America in the NiƱa, the Pinta and the Santa Maria and also, while he was at it, proved the Earth wasn’t flat?
Wrong, wrong and wrong. Given that the European explorer has a U.S. federal holiday to his name — and is honored by holidays in other countries as well — let’s look at the disturbing truth about the fearless but brutal Columbus.
*He didn’t prove that the Earth is round.
Kids in school have long been taught that when Columbus set sail in 1492 to find a new route to the East Indies, it was feared he would fall off the edge of the Earth because people then thought the planet was flat. Nope. As early as the sixth century B.C., Pythagoras — later followed by Aristotle and Euclid — wrote about Earth as a sphere, and historians say there is no doubt that the educated in Columbus’s day knew quite well that the Earth was round. Columbus in fact owned a copy of Ptolemy’s Geography, written at the height of the Roman Empire, 1,300 years before Chris Columbus set sail. Several books published in Europe between 1200 and 1500 discussed the Earth’s shape, including “The Sphere,” written in the early 1200s, which was required reading in European universities in the 1300s and beyond. The big question for Columbus, it turns out, was not the shape of the Earth but the size of the ocean he was planning to cross.

Strong quake hits Philippines; 85 killed
People walk past the damaged Church of San Pedro in Loboc, Philippines, after a strong earthquake Tuesday, Oct. 15.

A strong earthquake shook the Philippines, causing buildings and roofs to collapse, but a national holiday may have prevented higher casualties.
MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the central Philippines rose to 85, police said Tuesday, as more reports trickled in about toppled buildings and historic churches near the epicenter.
Bohol police chief Dennis Agustin said that 69 of the deaths came from the province, where the quake hit near the town of Carmen. At least 16 others died in nearby Cebu province and another on Siquijor Island.
The quake struck at 8:12 a.m. and was centered about 20 miles below Carmen on Bohol Island, where many buildings collapsed, roads cracked up and bridges fell.
Extensive damage also hit densely populated Cebu city, across a narrow strait from Bohol, causing deaths when a building in the port and the roof of a market area collapsed.

Here's Why Vermont Has the Highest Rate of Illicit Drug Use in America

Vermont has the highest rate of illicit drug use in the country with 15% of people saying they've used within the past month (compared to 4.2% in Utah, where illicit drug use is the lowest), according toHere's Why Vermont Has the Highest Rate of Illicit Drug Use in AmericaHere's Why Vermont Has the Highest Rate of Illicit Drug Use in America2010-2011 surveys from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
The Northeastern state ranked high for almost every type of drug, from marijuana to cocaine.
This trend is a consequence of factors including weather, politics, and proximity to big cities, according to Barbara Cimaglio, the Vermont Department of Health's deputy commissioner for alcohol and drug abuse programs.
"You have everything from the colder climate, which tends to be a reason some people give, to more liberal attitudes, to higher income levels, to people having more access, but I don't think anyone knows for sure," Barbara Cimaglio told Business Insider.
Cimaglio pointed out that marijuana accounts for a large portion of the state's drug use. Vermont ranked highest in the U.S. for marijuana use, with about 13% of people saying they've used it in the past month.

Graffiti artist Banksy says he sold original pieces for cheap in Central Park

Banksy says he sold original pieces in Central Park over the weekend — for only $60 each. An elderly man worked the pop-up stall at the edge of the park on Fifth Ave. near Central Park South.

Graffiti artist Banksy, whose works sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars, claims he sold original pieces at starving-artist prices over the weekend in Central Park.

“Yesterday I set up a stall in the park selling 100% authentic original signed Banksy canvases. For $60 each,” he wrote on his website Sunday.

The elusive British artist also posted a video of the pop-up stall on the edge of the park on Fifth Ave. near Central Park South featuring about 25 canvases of his black-and-white spray art.

Some of the artwork were riffs on famous Banksy graffiti works such as a rat riding a scooter and a bandana-masked protester hurling a bouquet of flowers.

3 Americans win Nobel Prize for economics

3 Americans win Nobel Prize for economics

"For their empirical analysis of asset prices," three Americans won the economics Nobel, a different prize from others because Alfred Nobel didn't create it.
STOCKHOLM — Americans Eugene Fama, Lars Peter Hansen and Robert Shiller have won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Monday honored the three "for their empirical analysis of asset prices."
The Nobel committees have now announced all six of the annual $1.2 million awards for 2013.
The economics award is not a Nobel Prize in the same sense as the medicine, chemistry, physics, literature and peace prizes, which were created by Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel in 1895.
Sweden's central bank added the economics prize in 1968 as a memorial to Nobel.

Senate hopeful Cory Booker outraising his opponent Steve Lonegan 8-1. Update!

Senate hopeful Cory Booker outraising his opponent Steve Lonegan 8-1. Update!
Courtesy of New Jersey.com:

Newark Mayor Cory Booker has outraised Republican Steve Lonegan 8-to-1 in the fundraising battle for the U.S. Senate, collecting $11.2 million in his first run for federal office to Lonegan’s $1.35 million as of Oct. 4, records show.

The last financial disclosures before Wednesday’s special election showed Booker is raising campaign cash in the same league as Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez – despite a shorter-than-usual race that began in June after Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s death.

Of course that was before Sarah Palin rode in to the rescue and delivered her glass shattering high pitched speech on his behalf.

Anybody think that helped Lonegan close the gap?

Anybody?

Anybody?

Beuller?

Beuller?

Update: A new poll shows that Booker has gone up two points in the polls since Palin's visit.

Like we couldn't see that coming.

Four reasons that Christian Fundamentalists are looking forward to the End Times.

2:22 AM By

Four reasons that Christian Fundamentalists are looking forward to the End Times.
Courtesy of Alter Net:

1. They don’t think they’ll be around for the worst of it. Modern American fundamentalist Christians believe in something that has never before been part of Christian tradition: the Rapture. The idea is that the true believers will be whisked away into heaven before the ugly parts of the end times begin. The idea was invented in the 19th century but only took off in the late 20th century because of pop culture products like the Left Behind series. As Christian writer and critic of evangelical culture Fred Clark explained, it’s an “escapist fantasy” and a way to avoid having to consider the possibility that they may die.

Christian writers don’t really hide that this is what’s going on with end times hope. As blogger Nathan Jones said, “It is an amazing hope to have because we can know that as terrible as it is getting out there, believers in Christ don't have much longer to worry about it.”

2. The end of the world would mean they get to have the last word. One thing that’s indisputable is that if the apocalypse does come and it unspools as Christians predicted, they will have won the argument! As Doug Weaver, a professor of religion at Baylor, explained to the Washington Post, “I think history will tell you that end time predictions increase when people are being persecuted or feel persecuted.”

While conservative Christians are most definitely not being persecuted, watching their privileges decline often makes them feel persecuted. When you feel put upon, mocked and persecuted, the desire to show your opponents you were right all along can become overwhelming. So much so, that you’re willing to wish for a fiery apocalypse just so you can say I told you so.

3. It provides a distraction from and an excuse to avoid the real problems in the world. The appeal of apocalypse fantasies is mainly that they help believers avoid the fear of death. (A secular version of this can be found in zombie apocalypse stories, which work because the audience identifies with the survivors, not the people who die, i.e. zombies.) However, belief that the end times are near is used by conservatives all the time to direct their followers politically.

4. They want to see the non-believers punished and themselves instated as the rightful rulers of all mankind. In 1980 , Pat Robertson laid out this hope bluntly, predicting that World War III and the end times were upon us, saying, “sorrow and bloodshed that will have no end soon, for the world is being torn apart, and my kingdom shall rise from the ruins of it.”

Or as Fred Clark said in his criticisms of the apocalypse fantasy books in the Left Behind series, “The authors' real message for those they regard as unsaved is to thumb their nose and do a little victory dance.”

This eagerness to see the non-believers punished is so strong in the Christian right that many are unwilling to wait until the so-called “Tribulation” described in the Left Behind books, and to a lesser degree the Bible, is upon us. That’s why, after any great tragedy, there is a rush of eager-beaver pastors willing to say this is what people have coming for being sinners, from Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson blaming “pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians” for 9/11 to John Hagee blaming the devastation of Hurricane Katrina on gay pride parades.

Now take a moment to remind yourself that THIS is the mindset embraced by numerous politicians currently creating policy for ALL of us, and of course standing in opposition to policies that would benefit the planet and its people.

And we also recently learned that we could count Justice Antonin Scalia among the superstitiously driven powerful men whose decisions have everlasting impacts on our nation.

Those who believe that the Rapture is nigh upon us, and further, that they themselves are among those who will leave this polluted overburdened orb for a chance to party with the Prince of Peace himself, should be kept as far away from politics as possible.

As Bill Maher pointed out last Friday:

"If you think the world is about to end that's your right. But you don't get to vote on next year's budget, because it doesn't concern you."

Personally I have to wonder why you would hire one of these simple son-of-a-bitches to do ANY job?

Why show up to work on time, put in 100% of your effort, or treat others with respect if you think your Greyhound bus to paradise is about to drive up and whisk you off at any moment?

I would MUCH prefer to work alongside an Atheist who is grateful for his time on this earth and wishes to protect it for future generations to come. A person who does the right thing, BECAUSE it's the right thing. A person who treats even the least among us with respect because he knows we are all in this together and, without a omnipotent deity watching over us, we need each other to survive and flourish.

But hey, that's just me.

If I were to go to your company, introduce myself, flash some identification, tell you I had a degree in business finance, and then ask that you hire me for the open position as the head of finance, what would you say? Would you walk me around the company, show me my new desk, introduce me to my new subordinates in finance, and welcome me to my new job? Hell no, you wouldn't. You would ask me for a resume, some documentation, I would have to fill out some paperwork, a w-2, show my identification, and then I would wait while you ran a background check on me. So how is it that we have a sitting president that we know nothing about? Well, we actually do know something about him, but he denies everything we do know.

First of all, we know he is not a “Natural Born Citizen”, and therefore is not eligible to be president per Article II section 1 of the United States Constitution. Many opponents of this line of thought would try to muddle the subject by bringing up later constitutional amendments or even bills that have the word “naturalized citizen”. The solution to define this is simply noted in a letter dated 25 July 1787 from John Jay, to George Washington in which he wrote “Permit me to hint, whether it would be wise and reasonable to provide a strong check to the admission of foreigners into the administration of our national Government: and to declare expressly that the command in chief of the American army shall not be given to, nor devolve on, any but a natural born Citizen”. The intent was to insure foreign influence would not be rendered over the office of president.

The constitution does not define “Natural Born Citizen” but there are court cases that do. In the Supreme Court Case 88 U.S. 162 Minor v. Happersett, argued: February 9, 1875 — Decided: March 29, 1875, the following opinion in part by Chief Justice Wait: “The Constitution does not, in words, say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common-law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives, or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners.”

The very purpose of the phrase “Natural Born Citizen” was put into the Constitution to keep people like Obama out of the office of president of the United States. As Obama’s father was Kenyan, this would have foreign influence over Obama. You can see plainly that Obama was a dual citizen at birth, therefore not a “Natural Born Citizen”. Mario Apuzzo authored an excellent article for you to start with research, with many court references. If you research this topic, you will find there is ample documentation that tells that the definition of “natural born citizen” is based on U.S. common law, which is based on Vattel’s Law of Nations. Vattel’s Law of Nations, section 212 states: “The natives, or natural born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens”.

Again, opponents would say, or have said, Obama received his U.S. citizenship through his mother who was a U.S. Citizen. That is fine, no-one is contesting whether he is a U.S. Citizen, we just know for a fact he is not a “Natural Born Citizen.” At this time, I would like to note that George Washington was not a “Natural Born Citizen”, thus the inclusion for “a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President.”

It is important to note that the phrase is used in the Constitution is “Natural Born Citizen”, and not “Natural Born Subject”. Those that claim the phrases are the same are incorrect. The difference is the difference between “English Common Law” and “The Law of Nations or the Principles of Natural law”. This is made evident by one statement written from Benjamin Franklin to Charles William Frederic Dumas in a letter dated 9 December 1775 to wit: “I am much obliged by the kind present you have made us of your edition of Vattel. It came to us in good season, when the circumstances of a rising state make it necessary frequently to consult the law of nations. Accordingly that copy, which I kept, (after depositing one in our own public library here, and sending the other to the College of Massachusetts Bay, as you directed,) has been continually in the hands of the members of our Congress, now sitting, who are much pleased with your notes and preface, and have entertained a high and just esteem for their author.” [...] Continued @ The Free Patriot.
