Scientists develop lightsaber molecules, and our job on Earth is done
Not so very long ago in a galaxy very, very close to ours (actually, quite recently indeed, and right here on Earth) some smart guys pretty much invented the lightsaber. A team of Harvard and MIT physicists have discovered a new form of matter which they say behaves much like the iconic melee weapon from "Star Wars." When blasting photons (something to do with light) through rubidium atoms (some other stuff), the particles came together to form "photonic molecules." When you shoot regular lasers at each other, they don't connect as they have no mass, but with a molecular structure, they can whack against each other. "When these photons interact with each other, they're pushing against and [deflecting] each other," said Harvard professor Mikhail Lukin. "The physics of what's happening in these molecules is similar to what we see in the movies." [Source]
